Peru Lifts Textile Safeguard

The safeguard measure imposed by the Government of Peru since 13 October 2004 against garments coming from the majority of Asian countries including Malaysia has been lifted on 5 May 2005. The measure was originally imposed primarily to protect the Peruvian garment  industry from the deluge of Asian imports (particularly Chinese).

Among the items affected were finished garments of cotton-like t-shirts, jackets, socks, sweaters, pullovers, pants, socks and brassieres.

As a result, Malaysian exporters of garments are no longer burdened by the additional tariff fee for the weight imported, thus making exports to Peru subject to the normal tariff of 20% ad valorem rate and VAT of 19%.
