Latest Policy on
Employment of Foreign Workers
Based
on the Dialogue with KDN held on February 5, 2002, the following policies on
Employment of Foreign Workers will take effect immediately :
1.
New Source Countries for manufacturing sector :
Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia,
Philippines,
Nepal, Myanmar, Laos,
Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan & Kazakhstan.
2.
Indonesian workers could only be recruited as a last resort.
However,
employers
who have been granted approval to recruit workers from Indonesia
prior
to this new policy could still proceed with their recruitment.
Existing
Indonesian workers would also be allowed to complete their
current
term of employment period in Malaysia.
3.
Duration - Three year work permits would be granted with 2
year-to-year extensions
(i.e.
3+1+1) for all foreign workers.
4.
Extension of work permit beyond the fifth year of service would be
considered
for skilled foreign workers. These foreign workers are
required to
have their skills assessed by the National Vocational Training
Council and
certified to have achieved at least Level 1 skill qualification.
The cost of
training for the skilled foreign workers would NOT be reimbursable from
Human Resource Development Fund.
