Malaysia - New Zealand FTA

  • On 30th March 2005, the Prime Minister of Malaysia and New Zealand agreed to launch bilateral FTA negotiations.

  • Six rounds of negotiations have been held to date.

  • Areas being negotiated under the Malaysia-New Zealand FTA include: 

    • trade in goods 

    • trade in services 

    • investment

    • customs procedures

    • trade remedies 

    • rules of origin

    • sanitary and phyto-sanitary (SPS) measures

    • intellectual property

    • technical barriers to trade

    • economic cooperation

  • Bilateral trade with New Zealand in 2005 was valued at RM3315.9 million. Exports were valued at RM2032.5 million and imports at RM1283.5 million

  • Negotiations are put on hold as both sides need to further reassess the inclusion of some areas in the agreement.
